| Patrick Bollen (1966) possesses an inborn capacity to capture the multiple layers of reality and the cultural differences that surround him. A photojournalist in relentless pursuit of people and their stories, his aim is to capture reality in a symbolic, poetic and informative way, be it at home or abroad. Ten years working for "De Standaard" and "Het Nieuwsblad" established his name and reputation. A multitude of both corporate and private clients further enhanced his reputation of being able to deliver unique and tailormade portraits and reportage. Right now, Patrick is pursuing his "Santa Cruz" project, but will consider specific assignments. "If you are looking for a superior image or reportage i will coordinate with you and tell you what is feasible." Past clients, both corporate and individual, have found this formula very satisfactory, Patrick is happy to travel economy class and stay at basic hotels. Contact him for a personalised quote. A global photographic project aiming to document different cities and communities which share the name Santa Cruz. The cross is one of the strongest symbols ever since dawn of humanity. Up until now, the historical motives which helped impose this name were largely ignored and poorly documented. Santa Cruz has become a household name having lost most of its’ historical connotations. This project aims to track the voyage of the settlers and conquistadores who, in the name of church and state, set out from the “old world” to conquer and claim new territories whilst “christening” some of them Santa Cruz. One could call it a travelogue bridging origins from the old world to its’ legacy in this new world. Its’ aim is to provide a historical perspective considering colonisation, globalisation and resulting factors such as syncretism. Adhering to modern photojournalistic standards, my photos represent a personal view of these different places, demonstrating an eclectic view of life there, showing different cultures which have that one, often forgotten, denominator. The timing of the reportage will always coincide with a particular event taking place. My aim is not to judge but to merely show different places solely connected by their name. As such, the project wil no doubt appeal to an international audience, Besides its’ global scale, all documented locations will have a sense of involvement making them synergetic partners in the project. The final result will be a colour photo book covering approximately twenty different locations across the continents. An accompanying text will track the roots and motives of these settlers and furthermore elaborate on present implications. A comprehensive selection of photos will be available for exhibition purposes.
